This Sustainability Associate position is supported through an innovative partnership between Puget Sound Energy and Strategic Energy Innovations. Aimed at addressing the myriad of energy and environmental sustainability initiatives, this Fellowship model presents a distinct opportunity to shape energy efficiencies and sustainability practices across sectors and institutional roles.
At the core of this program is developing the next generation of thinkers and doers to help address sustainability in education settings. Roles in educational sustainability require a distinct combination of aptitudes including project management, data analytics, and community development. In addition to the Climate Corps training and UC Climate Stewards Certificate, this position offers professional development opportunities designed to help provide the range of skills necessary to execute sustainable programs or practices.
The candidate will work on pressing climate and sustainability problems and be relied upon to work toward replicable solutions. A customized mix of on-the-job training, fieldwork, and class time will help the Fellow hone marketable skills and draw important professional connections while making a marked difference in the K-12 community.
<h2>Role and Responsibilities</h2>

<h2>Minimum Qualifications</h2>

Are you concerned about how climate change will affect frontline communities? Join the Alameda County Office of Sustainability team to support local community resilience. As a Climate Resilience Associate, you will use your research and communications skills to engage strategic partners from the County&rsquo;s 20 agencies in preparing our crucial social safety net programs for the impacts of climate change.
<h2>Responsibilities</h2>
1) You will contribute to the implementation of the county&rsquo;s Climate Action Plan for Government Services and Operations, including convening internal partners to support the resilience and health of the Alameda County community, such as through the engagement of community-based organizations or the development of protective action materials for smoke and heat.
2) You will gather information to support the adaptation of County services to a changing climate. Your research will help determine which resilience efforts are best suited to Alameda County and how we can effectively approach this new challenge. You will look at climate change&rsquo;s health impacts (such as extreme heat) on Alameda County residents, particularly those frontline communities most affected. You will coordinate with internal and external partners to identify potential strategies, share best practices, and support implementation.
3) You will develop communications and outreach materials to promote climate action in the workplace and convey ways to prepare and respond to the effects of climate change. You will create written web content, infographics, case studies, videos, or training to engage employees, County decision-makers, members of the public, and other jurisdictions and organizations, on topics ranging from climate resilience to green purchasing. You will be trained in and practice applying proven approaches for environmental behavior change, such as social marketing, to develop effective messages.
4) You will contribute to educating agency staff on opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint or climate vulnerabilities of County business operations or supply chains. This includes supporting the County&rsquo;s award-winning sustainable purchasing efforts by assisting with research, analysis, or education on green purchasing decisions. Research projects may include supporting social service and healthcare vendors that work with the County to learn about operational decisions that support sustainability, cost savings, health, and climate resilience.

Resilience Associate

<h2>Overview</h2>
Are you passionate about waste reduction and want to help others understand how to recycle right and compost correctly? Join Alameda County&rsquo;s Office of Sustainability to transition County operations into the exciting new phase of waste prevention and upstream solutions.
The Compost and Recycling Associate will manage projects that expand and increase the effectiveness of waste diversion programs at County facilities, as well as develop new initiatives to improve waste reduction and reuse opportunities in County operations.
Note: this position requires a California Driver&rsquo;s license to be obtained by October 4, 2024, so you can use County fleet vehicles to reach sites that may not be convenient to reach by transit. (If this is a challenge for your circumstances, please communicate this in your first interview.)
<h2>Roles &amp; Responsibilities</h2>
<h3>Waste and recycling operations:&nbsp;</h3>
1) You will implement and update our composting and recycling programs at a number of owned and leased County facilities. Updating this enhanced recycling program, or launching it at new sites, involves completing waste assessments; developing site-specific roll-out plans; and coordinating with janitors, waste haulers, and other stakeholders to implement the plans. You will also do targeted outreach to employees to ensure the program is used correctly.
2) You will design and lead engaging educational workshops and outreach campaigns to improve recycling and composting rates and waste sorting practices at existing facilities. You will also have opportunities to update and implement new outreach materials such as online training videos, website content, and print materials.
3) To ensure overall success, you will also conduct waste audits, assist in the delivery of services (i.e., placing bins and signs at sites, coordinating service delivery, researching and purchasing waste/recycling systems), and work with internal and external partners using verbal and written communication to troubleshoot day-to-day operational waste issues.
<h3>Waste reduction and sustainability strategy:&nbsp;</h3>
4) You will play a key role in the implementation of the County&rsquo;s Climate Action Plan for Government Services and Operations, including expanding the County&rsquo;s current reuse program, assessing opportunities for waste reduction and waste diversion in County facilities, and developing outreach strategies to assist County employees transition to these new and updated programs.
5) You will help design new waste reduction efforts such as researching circular economy and waste prevention initiatives and software tools to implement at the County.

Compost & Recycling Associate

Are you passionate about addressing sustainability and climate impacts in the built environment? The Green Building Associate will manage projects that set the County on the path toward carbon neutrality and conserving resources in County-owned facilities and landscapes.
The Green Building Associate will work closely with staff in the Alameda County Office of Sustainability to promote and implement green building, green purchasing, and waste reduction projects.
<h2>Responsibilities</h2>
1) You will support the development and integration of green building and green purchasing standards into the operations of our partner County departments by doing technical and market research, engaging stakeholders, publishing guidelines, and implementing selected strategies.
2) You will support the updating of the County&rsquo;s green building ordinance and support the implementation of strategic initiatives in partnership with key departments responsible for measures in the County&rsquo;s Climate Action Plan for Government Services and Operations.

Green Building Associate

<h2>Overview</h2>
The Electric Vehicle Associate will join the Alameda County General Services Agency Logistics team, a nationally recognized leader in green vehicle deployment. The fellow&rsquo;s primary goal is to reduce operational transportation-related emissions by 1) advancing the deployment of an all-electric vehicle (EV) fleet and 2) supporting employee clean commuting. You will develop and implement these actions using goals and metrics from the County&rsquo;s Climate Action Plan for Government Services and Operations, coordinating with the County&rsquo;s Office of Sustainability.&nbsp;
This position will give you the opportunity to work directly on cutting-edge sustainable transportation policy programs, collaborate with external partners, and gain knowledge of tools needed to manage a fleet of EVs and advocate for alternative commute methods. The EV Associate will work on strategies to reduce the energy impact from our growing number of EV charging stations while contributing to the expansion of the fleet and infrastructure.
<h2>Key Responsibilities</h2>
Key responsibilities of the EV Associate may include:&nbsp;

The City of Los Angeles is working against climate change with a plan to lead the world toward a low-carbon, green-energy future. The FUSE Executive Fellow will provide the foundational research towards developing a climate resilience plan that equitably addresses energy resilience throughout The City of Los Angeles.
Fellowship Dates: July 22, 2024 &ndash; July 21, 2025
Salary:&nbsp;Executive Fellows are FUSE employees and receive an annual salary of $80,000. Fellows can also access various health, dental, and vision insurance benefits. ABOUT THE FUSE EXECUTIVE FELLOWSHIP
FUSE is a national nonprofit that increases the effectiveness of local governments to build more equitable communities. We embed private sector executives in city and county agencies to lead projects that narrow racial disparities, improve public services, and accelerate systems change. Since 2012, FUSE has led over 400 projects in 58 governments across 26 states, impacting a total population equivalent to 1 in 10 Americans.
When designing each fellowship project, FUSE works closely with government partners and local stakeholders to define a scope of work that will achieve substantive progress toward regional priorities. FUSE then conducts an individualized search for each project to ensure that the selected candidate has at least 15 years of professional experience, the required competencies for the role, and deep connections to the communities being served. They are data-driven and results-oriented and able to effectively manage complex projects by developing actionable roadmaps and monitoring progress to completion.
Executive Fellows are hired as FUSE employees and embedded in government agencies for at least one year of full-time work. Throughout their fellowships, they receive training, coaching, and professional support from FUSE to help achieve their project goals. FUSE Executive Fellows bring diverse perspectives and new approaches to their projects. They build strong relationships with diverse arrays of stakeholders, foster alignment within and across various layers of government, and build partnerships between governments and communities.
PROJECT CONTEXT
Under the Mayoral guidance, the City of Los Angeles leadership recognizes the pressing urgency of the climate crisis as one of the foremost challenges confronting the city. They view it as a challenge and a remarkable opportunity for Los Angeles to revamp its infrastructure and invest in a more equitable future. The City understands that addressing the catastrophic consequences of climate change entails transforming the economy and rectifying decades of environmental injustices that have disproportionately burden marginalized communities with pollution and neglect. In this endeavor, the City of LA aspires to set an example by prioritizing the interests of communities of color and working-class individuals in its policies and programs.
Residents' fundamental rights include access to clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment in their residence, work, and recreation. Unfortunately, many cities, including Los Angeles, fail to safeguard these fundamental rights. While the adverse health effects of toxic air, polluted water, and contaminated soil affect all Angelenos, these harms disproportionately afflict low-income Latino, Black, and immigrant neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Conversely, environmental benefits like open spaces, parks, and tree canopy coverage are significantly less accessible to these communities.
The City has already taken steps toward preparing for a sustainable future, including developing a Sustainable City Plan and the ongoing city-wide vulnerability assessment. The City has also received recognition for its climate protection efforts, thanks to the dedication of a past FUSE Executive Fellow.
The City of Los Angeles will collaborate with FUSE to craft a comprehensive climate resilience plan that spans the entire city and is informed by neighborhood-specific considerations. The FUSE Executive Fellow will chart the current climate resilience landscape, identify gaps for future planning, and establish a hyper-local baseline, primarily focusing on addressing the needs and building capacity in neighborhoods across Los Angeles. The FUSE Executive Fellow will also collaborate on developing department-specific directives, including resource allocation and locally-led innovative designs.
PROJECT SUMMARY &amp; POTENTIAL DELIVERABLES
The following provides a general overview of the proposed fellowship project. This project summary and the potential deliverables will be collaboratively revisited by the host agency, the fellow, and FUSE staff during the first few months of the fellowship.
Starting in July 2024, the FUSE Executive Fellow will undertake a comprehensive landscape analysis to catalog climate-related project requirements across all City departments. This will include conducting a listening tour with key stakeholders. The FUSE Executive Fellow will assess successful strategies from various localities and engage with relevant stakeholders, including other city departments, government agencies, private enterprises, and community members. This engagement aims to better understand existing and future funding opportunities at local, state, and national levels.
Moreover, the fellow will begin a collaborative effort, working through the Mayor's Office, to formulate a strategic, interdepartmental vision that ensures equitable energy resilience and enhances environmental justice for historically underserved communities throughout the City of Los Angeles.
Ultimately, this initiative will accelerate energy adaptation and scaling within different neighborhoods of Los Angeles, each with unique challenges, needs, and opportunities. For instance, Venice will present distinct challenges compared to Los Feliz. Within this project lies the potential for the City of Los Angeles to develop a scalable model for equitably managing energy adaptation and achieving true climate resilience, which can serve as a global example.
The FUSE Executive Fellow will establish the energy-resilient baseline for the City of Los Angeles by conducting an equity-centered review of various sources. Recognizing the diverse needs of the City's many neighborhoods, the fellow will adopt a hyper-local approach, emphasizing historically marginalized neighborhoods. This approach will examine equitable access to public transportation, green spaces, emergency evacuation routes and methods, EV charging stations, and other relevant factors.
By July 2025, the FUSE Executive Fellow will have:

<li>Created a guide for future planning of collaborative, community-led opportunities for energy resilience- conducted a thorough listening tour to identify foundational current and past initiatives and priorities; identified models of energy resilience planning and operationalization strategies other cities are implementing that could be applicable in Los Angeles; reviewed a wide range of the City of Los Angeles specific energy resilience reports, assessments, and research that inform the creation of the energy resilience plan, and ongoing support of the Mayor&rsquo;s Office.</li>

This Sustainability Associate position is supported through an innovative partnership between Puget Sound Energy and Strategic Energy Innovations. Aimed at addressing the myriad of energy and environmental sustainability initiatives, this Fellowship model presents a distinct opportunity to shape energy efficiencies and sustainability practices across sectors and institutional roles.
At the core of this program is developing the next generation of thinkers and doers to help address sustainability in higher education settings. Roles in educational sustainability require a distinct combination of aptitudes including project management, data analytics, and community development. In addition to the Climate Corps training and professional certificate, this position offers professional development opportunities designed to help provide the range of skills necessary to execute sustainable programs or practices.&nbsp;
The candidate will work on pressing climate and sustainability problems and be relied upon to work toward replicable solutions. ABOUT THE CLERKSHIP
In accord with our mission to build the skills and capacity of tomorrow&rsquo;s leaders, ELI provides opportunities for law students to join us at the Institute. We welcome applications from current law students interested in working as a law clerk during the fall 2024 academic semester (approximately September &ndash; November). Law clerks work closely with ELI experts on domestic and international research projects spanning ELI&rsquo;s full range of program areas.
Law clerks also may assist in the editing and production of ELI publications, such as the Environmental Law Reporter. In order to participate in the paid law clerk program, you must be physically present in the DC metro area (where ELI&rsquo;s office is located) during the clerkship. If a clerk desires to receive course credit for the clerkship and the clerk&rsquo;s school prohibits earning income for the same work as the course credit is being received, accommodations can be made. Clerkships during the academic year run approximately 12 weeks, and clerks work part-time (approximately 12 hours per week).

Do you love gardening or being outdoors?&nbsp;<a href="https://www.seiinc.org/" target="">SEI</a>&nbsp;is seeking emerging education professionals to join our&nbsp;<a href="https://www.climatecorps.org/cceo-fellowship.html">Climate Corps Education Outside</a>&nbsp;(CCEO) AmeriCorps cohort to advance science and eco-literacy in public elementary schools by activating school gardens as a learning laboratory for environmental education.
CCEO&rsquo;s program objectives are to:
<ul>
<li>Spark children&rsquo;s interest in science</li>
<li>Increase children&rsquo;s environmental stewardship knowledge</li>
<li>Develop children&rsquo;s connection with the natural world</li>
<li>Improve children&rsquo;s attitude towards vegetables</li>
</ul>
CCEO is an&nbsp;11.5-month,&nbsp;full-time (40 hours per week)&nbsp;fellowship program starting on August 19th and concluding at the end of July. This program offers emerging environmental educators extensive professional development and training as they advance outdoor science education in Bay Area public schools. While we encourage Fellows to continue the Fellowship for a second term to provide a level of consistency to our school partners, it is not required.
As a CCEO Fellow, you will be placed at a public elementary school and serve as the garden educator of that site. Fellows teach 10-16 garden and science lessons per week on Mondays through Thursdays to students in grades K-5 in the on-campus outdoor garden classroom using the provided CCEO curriculum. Fridays are designated for cohort-wide training and site administration. You will also maintain the outdoor garden classroom and work to engage the larger school community in the space. As part of a cohort of approximately 30 CCEO Fellows, you will participate in a year-long training and professional development program designed to support you in your role. Over the summer, you will work to improve curriculum and program resources, maintain your outdoor classroom, and participate in other program projects. Work site locations include North/Western San Francisco, &nbsp;South/Eastern San Francisco, Northern San Mateo County, and Southern San Mateo County.
CCEO Fellows serve a high percentage of low-income children and many English-language learners. Fellows must be committed to social justice and have cultivated or be willing to cultivate a lens of cultural humility, intersectionality, and belonging. While the field of environmental education has a long way to go, we strive for equity and inclusivity for Fellows, program staff, schools, and students.
<h4>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS</h4>
I. Learning &amp; Teaching Outdoors&nbsp;
CCEO Fellows provide garden-based lessons that help students practice science and connect to the natural world. As a CCEO Fellow, you will:
<ul>
<li>Prepare for and teach multiple lessons per day to various grade levels, which may include Special Day Classes</li>
<li>Create a safe and positive outdoor classroom culture</li>
<li>Apply a lens of cultural humility to all teaching and learning with students</li>
<li>Adapt and implement the provided CCEO curriculum for your school site</li>
<li>Collaborate with teachers to integrate indoor and outdoor learning experiences</li>
<li>Coordinate harvesting, cooking, and eating in the garden with students as part of your lessons</li>
</ul>
II. Outdoor Classroom Design&nbsp;
CCEO Fellows develop and maintain inviting, educational, and productive garden classrooms. As a CCEO Fellow, you will:
<ul>
<li>Collaborate with your school community to maintain and improve the school garden</li>
<li>Plant and maintain an edible vegetable garden</li>
<li>Plant and maintain perennial plants for student exploration and long-term garden habitat</li>
<li>Perform regular maintenance tasks such as weeding, watering, harvesting, and pest control</li>
<li>Develop garden infrastructure to support learning outcomes</li>
<li>Purchase garden supplies and instructional materials using the provided site budget</li>
</ul>
III. Community Engagement&nbsp;
CCEO Fellows build strong relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders, communicate about their work, and identify and support needs in the school community. As a CCEO Fellow, you will:
<ul>
<li>Represent and manage the Climate Corps Education Outside program at your school</li>
<li>Build strong relationships with community members to serve the needs of the school and students</li>
<li>Spread awareness of the program through conversations, presentations, photos, blogging, newsletters, bulletin board displays, etc.</li>
<li>Engage parent and community volunteers in the garden&nbsp;</li>
<li>Seek out grants and donations to support the garden space</li>
</ul>
IV. Professional Development&nbsp;
CCEO Fellows participate in bi-monthly program training sessions to support their growth as educators. As a CCEO Fellow, you will:&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Attend and actively participate in training sessions focused on building your teaching, gardening, and community engagement skills</li>
<li>Engage in quarterly lesson observations with your Regional Supervisor to discuss and implement feedback</li>
</ul>
V. Site Administration&nbsp;
CCEO Fellows track data about program implementation at their school site, which is integral to demonstrating impact to funders. As a CCEO Fellow, you will support organizational data collection by:&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Tracking and inputting individual student attendance</li>
<li>Tracking and inputting &nbsp;completed lessons with groups of students</li>
<li>Collecting and inputting data related to volunteer engagement and grantseeking</li>
<li>Administering pre- and post-student assessments at the beginning and end of the school year</li>
</ul>
<h4>COMPENSATION &amp; BENEFITS</h4>
<ul>
<li>A living allowance stipend of $3,092 per month (pre-tax amount), for a total stipend of up to $35,000 over 11.5 months.</li>
<li>An additional $10,000 education award upon successful program completion (comprised of the Segal Education award at $7,395 and the Californians For All Award at $2,605)</li>
<li>Kaiser Silver Healthcare&ndash;SEI pays 100% of the insurance premiums</li>
<li>Member Assistance Program (MAP), which provides free telehealth counseling services</li>
<li>A minimum of 6 observed holidays and 3 breaks (Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring) in alignment with your site&rsquo;s school calendar</li>

<li>10+ hours of individualized professional coaching and mentoring from SEI staff</li>
